13th Month Pay Guide in the Philippines
The poll aimed to test the knowledge of participants regarding the official date by which employers are required to provide the 13th Month Pay to their employees in the Philippines.
Out of the provided options for the release date of the 13th Month Pay, 63% of respondents chose December 24th, 34% selected December 1st, 2% opted for December 25th, and only 1% believed it to be December 31st.
What is the 13th-month Pay?
It's a mandatory legal benefit for Filipino employees, equating to one-twelfth of an employee’s basic annual salary.
Nearly all employees in the Philippines, including regular, probationary, piece-rate, and those in private companies.
Exclusions: Government entities, employers already giving a 13th-month pay, and certain commission-based workers.
Must be released “on or before December 24th” as per PD No. 851. However, some companies might give half at the school year’s start and the remainder by December 24th.
Regular employees: Basic monthly salary (without allowances/benefits) divided by 12. Piece-rate or commission: Based on average monthly earnings for the year.
Employees still get a proportionate amount based on their working duration in the year.
13th-month pay and other benefits are tax-exempt up to P82,000.00 but Philippine's 2018 Income Tax reform bill called Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (or TRAIN) raised the threshold to the current P90,000.
Beyond being a bonus, the 13th-month pay showcases the Philippines’ dedication to its workforce's financial health. As holidays near, remember to understand your rights and entitlements. For queries, contact DOLE hotline at 1349.

Filipinos' Job Choices: Local or Global?
In our latest Work Is Life PH article, we tackle the growing trend of Filipinos favoring global jobs over local ones.
Key insights include:
The wage gap: Local salaries often don't match the demands of living, whereas international companies reward excellence with better pay.
Growth: International firms often provide more opportunities for career advancement.
Environment & Bias: Local work settings can be challenging, and prejudices related to age, tattoos, and family status persist.
Culture: Younger employees resonate more with the inclusive culture of multinational companies.
The conclusion is that local firms need to not only match pay but also create a nurturing, inclusive work environment to retain talent.
